The Power of a Vacuum Cleaner

My stories usually come to me while I am sleeping. I wake up and frantically try to remember what I wanted to write down. If you are a writer, you know that when you get it down on paper/laptop/etc.,  it is almost never as good as your dream made it. Sometimes it’s better, but rarely.

Well, today I was vacuuming our bedroom, something I do almost every day. And there it was…the story for the third book in the Rubyville series. Yes, I have had an idea for a year now about where it was generally going, but today, it all fell into place. As I write, little turns and changes will happen, but the story is there! Maybe when I get stuck on a passage I should just go vacuum. My books and my house will thank me for it. Have a great Saturday!

A Day to Remember

Go Above and Beyond…Always

It is never fun to sit in the hospital. Whether it be the emergency room, visiting someone or waiting for someone during their surgery. The only exception to this may be waiting to hear about a new baby…but there is still that hospital atmosphere. I don’t mind that atmosphere if I am taking blood pressure, helping someone to eat, and generally taking care of them. I really like that atmosphere then, but the other side is…difficult.

Yesterday our son had his fourth surgery on his left ear, his sixth ear surgery, and his tenth surgery since he was born. We have spent a lot of time waiting and praying. For all of the ear surgeries, they were way more complicated than the two doctors expected. That added several hours to waiting when we thought a surgery would be over in a couple hours. Those hours are scary for parents. Yesterday was the best day. Yes, we spent the entire day at the hospital…waiting, but it was good news…and somehow that makes it more worth the wait.

One nurse stood out in my mind…and she made the day much easier. She came into the waiting room every half hour or so, more often if needed, to give updates to the family and friends waiting for their loved one. Each person had her undivided attention, she explained as much as she was allowed and able, and she did it with compassion and patience…over and over and over. She sat and talked if needed, gave encouragement and let everyone know that she and the staff were there to help, just call.

This nurse was being paid to do a job, just as all the other hospital staff were, but she went above and beyond…and you don’t see that much anymore. This nurse turned our day around after we had been greeted and treated as if we were idiots when we first arrived in admitting. This nurse did her job to earn a paycheck, just as we all do, but many of us don’t extend ourselves and put our best foot forward.

Thank you to this nurse for her exceptional work ethic. It was appreciated yesterday. Let it be a reminder to all of us that we shouldn’t just work to get paid, but to make a difference if someone else’s life. And you don’t need to be a nurse to do that. You can work at Dairy Queen, drive a truck, or work at Wal-Mart. Make someone’s day special. It will be remembered.

GoodReads

You all should check this out so you can see who is currently at the top of my list on goodreads. It is located right here on your left, toward the bottom of that sidebar.

Goodreads is kind of a fun place to go. You can answer trivia questions…I had one correct and one wrong, and look for all kinds of books. I created a trivia question for To Thee I’m Wed, so for those of you that have read it, see if you know the correct answer. You may also create trivia questions and quizzes for my books. I would love to see if I can answer the trivia or questions you create! 😉

WWW

Have you been there? The great, black hole we call the world wide web. It holds great fascination, hours of enjoyment, and you can find just about anything. And that is where the problem resides.

I just went to YouTube, to find a song I wanted to post about. Now, almost an hour later, I have seen that song and about 50 others. One loads, you watch about a minute of it and then the side bar calls you with pictures and titles of another song that looks just as good. You repeat that process for an hour, (hopefully you can keep it to that) and then you get on with your day, feeling really lazy and like you haven’t accomplished a thing.

The song I was looking for was ‘Get Happy’ and it was sung by Judy Garland and others. The tune was running through my head and I wanted to hear the actual words. It wasn’t what I was really looking for, but I did stumble upon…well actually ‘click upon’ several other songs. Most were from the old movies, the musicals with the brightly colored dresses and wonderful dancing. You watch one of those movies and you cannot be sad for long.

So while the world wide web can be a huge time waster, it can also be very useful in many ways. I use it everyday for various things, and it is very much appreciated…most of the time. So now that I have several jingles bouncing through my mind, and visions of swirling dresses, I will climb out of that hole and… get to work. If you read one of my books and I break into song during the dialog…you will know why.

I Will Survive!

That moment when you end up with your breakfast down the front of your clean clothes…ready to start the day. Each morning, I try to make a smoothie for my husband and I, and our youngest daughter. I have been surprised about the merits of it. I sleep through the night now, no getting up several times or laying awake for hours. I generally go to sleep fairly quickly as well. So, those items alone have kept me drinking this in the morning for about three months now. Surprisingly, the two people mentioned above also enjoy it.

smoothie

But, this it not a post about smoothies. This post is about all those frustrations in our lives, the little things that shouldn’t seem like much, but are. They are common to all of us.

So…that moment when you have slimy, green gunk splattered all over your clean clothes for the day. A new pair of hose shredded on the way out the door by an excited puppy, kitten or toddler. A baby spitting up or leaking on your outfit just as you are about to walk out the door for church or work. Rushing out to your car, late for church or work and seeing a flat tire. Again, late for those two activities mentioned several times…it’s winter and it snowed over night…no garage. And don’t think you can clear off everything but the top of a mini-van. The laws of physics prove that all that snow, some 200 pounds of it, will slide forward at your first stop…and bury you.

How about that time you were eating with friends or fellow workers? (Yes, they could be one and the same.) You managed to have that rather large bite of food land in your lap? Please let me re-word that. The time when that large bite of food slid off your fork, plopped on your chest and dripped bit by bit down your front until it landed in a soppy pile on your lap. Just going straight to the lap would have been way to convenient because you could have discreetly laid your napkin over it and pretended it didn’t happen. Icy weather is always a joy. You never fall by yourself…it is always in front of people. Yes, they do rush over to help, ask if you are alright. But wouldn’t you prefer to hurriedly crawl to a support of some sort and stand by yourself…again, pretend as though it didn’t happen? We will go out with a bang…something I know you all have experienced. That little bit of food, stuck between your teeth. It could be lettuce, spinach, a peppercorn…let your imagination run wild. You will always feel the incredible urge to smile, when this happens.

Now that I am older, the above scenarios don’t frighten me as they used to. And yes, I have experienced them all…more than once. Maybe I now understand that I will not die if I have food on the front of me or if someone sees me being stupid. I will survive and live another day to do the same. Isn’t life wonderful? Enjoy your day, food-covered shirt and all!

No Words …

I am a writer. I love to write, and express myself through words. Sometimes no words are best…and this is one of those times. Please watch this very moving performance.

Just For Fun!

Dreaming

Anyone that has known me for awhile, understands my love of the Civil War era. The time period leading up to it is one of my favorite in history. It is probably because of the clothing…mostly. If I had lived in that era, unfortunately for me I would not have been one of the women lounging on the veranda, sipping a Mint Julep. My relatives came from Norway and Sweden, (at least the ones I can track) and they settled in Minnesota. They were poor farmers and I have seen pictures of great, great, etc. grandmothers sitting on the porch, in a rocker, wearing hob-nail boots and smoking a corn pipe.  That ends my romantic Gone With the Wind dream right there!

images

I do have a great imagination…probably what led to the writing thing. After I saw Gone With the Wind the first time, I had to have a hoop skirt. I didn’t think they made them anywhere anymore and if they did, I certainly couldn’t have afforded one on my paper girl money! Besides, my parents would have thought I lost my mind. So, I took apart several wire hangers, not an easy task, mind you and then I stretched them into circles. I think I made around three or four in graduating widths. I hooked a couple together to make them longer…and I had my hoop skirt! I draped a sheet or two over the top and proudly showed my siblings. I’m sure they thought I was crazy as well! My father said something to the effect of pretty ingenious, but a waste of hangers and time and if I had so much on my hands, maybe I needed more chores. I of course thought I looked gorgeous and Scarlett O’Hara had nothing on me!

As I have posted before, I was absolutely thrilled when I learned they had a spring ball in a town close to our town. We were attending jam sessions in this town almost every Friday night for while. So when they offered Contra Dance lessons before the ball, I was in! January and February of that year I sewed non-stop. First my daughter’s ball gown, then mine, three vests for my husband and son, string ties as well. Our two youngest daughters were not old enough to wear the hoops, but they dressed for the era as well. Of course all of this took much research . I loved it! I also learned that you could buy hoop skirts and they really weren’t that expensive. Wal-Mart had some great patterns on sale. Our second oldest and I were about as authentic as you could get for the 21st century…and it didn’t cost very much either. It was a dream come true.

The night of the ball arrived. Our oldest daughter, expecting our first grandchild, took many pictures for us. We piled our dresses, literally, into our mini van and headed to the ball. It was such a fun night! My husband probably hated it, but he really was a great dancer. He could remember all the steps I couldn’t and he was very gracious when I messed up. Not to mention he looked wonderful as well.

For me, it was a dream come true. We only went to two balls. The first one was in the winter and we kind of just put together our outfits. I had skirts I had made years before and I made a blouse to go with the black and white flannel skirt I wore. With all the petticoats beneath, we stayed nice and warm.

I do wish I could go back and live during that period of history for just a short time. I would have certain criteria of course. Before the Civil War, I would have had a grand mansion on the east coast, (way too hot for me in the south!) and on and on in my perfect world. But dreaming is what makes life more bearable at times. Sometimes our dreams become reality…but that’s for another post!

A Day to Remember

Your Choice…

As I look back over the past year…which is what we all tend to do on this day…so many emotions swamp my thoughts. Some years of your life have been generally good, some years not so good. This year for our family has been hard to pin down when it comes to the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ aspect. The fiery darts have seemed to come from all directions and the blessings have trickled down through the smoke. But there have been blessings.

Each of us can choose to concentrate and remember the bad, the fiery darts…or we can make a conscious decision to be absorbed in the good. This doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye to what has gone on or that we forget, but our effort and thoughts go into the edifying and building up, not the tearing down. I’ve done a lot of tearing down this year and if I were to make a New Year’s Resolution, it would be to spend more time building up and encouraging. And if you think about it…you just feel better when you build up and encourage and love the other person. It takes a lot of energy to hate, be bitter and stay angry.

This year, we lost my husband’s mother, but she gained heaven and the joy of being with all those that have gone before her. This year we ‘lost’ another daughter, but gained a new son-in-law. Our son has had a couple more surgeries with more to come, but he was also okayed for two new hearing devices. God has provided the insurance coverage for those surgeries. Our son being able to play guitar and sing, as he is so talented in doing, may be more of a reality again in 2016. My husband resigned as a pastor, but in that we also know of two young men that are very gifted in teaching God’s word and it’s exciting to see what God has planned in all of that. Again, the blessings trickling down through the rough and challenging times.

My writing has taken off in 2015 and I am so very excited to see where it flies! It is a gift to me that I pray I am able to share with many in 2016 and the years to come. I would never have thought all of this would have been possible last year at this time.

Life is difficult and filled with challenges. We still have some to work out in our own personal lives. But we will have the answers at some point and more obstacles will come. Choose to look at the good, concentrate on the blessings and your cup will be running over. Have a Blessed New Year 2016!

Let It Snow!

let it snowAs a child, I loved snow. Growing up in Colorado, it would snow and generally it would melt within a couple days. We would have a lot at a time, but it wouldn’t stick around for long. Then we moved to Vermont. There is snowed, and snowed, and snowed. Every day it just grew deeper. The piles in the parking lots were there until June. I didn’t like snow so much anymore after that.

As an adult, I still love snow. As long as it snows in November and December and there is no ice with it. For me, that sets the holiday mood even more. I love a white Christmas! But as an adult, you also have to think of things like, driving to work in it, shoveling out your car BEFORE driving to work in it, etc. By the time January arrives, I would be fine with it being a pleasant 70 degrees, a touch of rain here and there to keep things green.

Living in Kansas, that is not how it works. If we have snow, it will generally be AFTER Christmas and after January. It has snowed as late as April 17th in  my memory of living here. Not so pleasant, especially since you have had a couple REALLY nice days of upper seventies by that date. Just enough to kind of tease you about spring.

We had a little bit of white just after Christmas this year. We were to have a big storm, with many inches piling up, but it kind of petered out. So it rained, more freezing rain, and then it kind of froze so we had white on the roads and sidewalks. And now it’s cold! For me it can still snow until New Years Day. I will give it one more chance, just a couple more days. Which brings me to the reason I wanted to write this.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! is a song usually sung at Christmas time. But it is really a winter song in my mind. So I wanted to share it with you here. For me, it brings to mind that cozy feeling when it is cold outside and really piling up in big, white mounds. You don’t want to leave, just be close to family and friends and sit beside the fire. Just about a perfect day! Enjoy this Walt Disney version! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sawh40RHFFE

A Day to Remember

Merry Christmas!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. With that one line, most of us know the story. I wrote that from memory, so I do hope I have it correct! Tonight we will hang our stockings, or fill the ones that have been hanging for a month now, collecting dust. We will set out the presents and sneak off to bed by midnight if possible. Your tree will look something like this, as ours did back in 2008.

Another line that is very familiar to us is this: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:11, KJV)

manger scene

Tomorrow is the day set aside to remember the birth of our Savior. No, it probably was not on December 25th. But that is the day we celebrate. As you cherish the day with family and friends, opening gifts, and eating way too much food…remember. God’s son was sent to us, born as a baby and grew to be a man. He walked on this earth, lived a life of a carpenter and was a testimony of what we should be in our own lives. Then he died for us, giving us the opportunity to accept or deny him.

I pray your day is filled with joy. Merry Christmas, from me to you!
