NaNoWriMo

Everyone connected with writing has heard of National Novel Writing Month, which takes place in November each year. It is commonly referred to as NaNoWriMo. The goal is to write a 50,000 word count manuscript between November 1st and November 30th. It’s to be a rough draft. There are even places that you can sign in so that you have encouragement to keep going from others typing their fingers to the bones.

I do think about this each year. But November is a really difficult time for me to write. The holiday season is upon us, and we have several birthdays, mine included in the month of November. Not to mention that turkey day is a pretty big celebration towards the end of the month. But…if you aren’t well on your way by Thursday, the 28th this year, you’re probably not going to get that 50,000 word count accomplished.

Since I left my job as the activity director at our local nursing home this past August, I have been writing. I had my third book in a series started before I began the job on January 15, 2018. I had about 20,000 words written. I had also designed the cover and had it ready to go. Well of course, the best laid plans always have a hitch in them. During that year and a half, the publishing program I used went over to Amazon. So many changes there. Yes, I was already a part of KDP, but now it was all-encompassing. The new publishing format changed the way covers are created. So will probably have to start from scratch with my cover.

The good news…since I left my job on August 9th I wrote 48,000 words in about a month! This also included me doing some of my own editing along the way. So, in my own little world I’m going to count that as my NaNoWriMo. It’s a huge feeling of satisfaction to know that manuscript is finished and now ready for my editor to take over. Two proofs were ordered yesterday, and now I need to learn all I can on how to get that cover I designed into the new formatting.

I know I’ve had many readers asking about the third book in this latest series. I’ve had many readers encouraging me to write and keep it up. A huge “thank you!” goes out to all of you. Without that, it would have made it very difficult to continue thinking about writing over the past year and a half. It would have been very easy to give up and concentrate on another career. I absolutely love to write and could do it 24/7, but life has to happen along the way. This includes having a home, fixing meals, laundry, and paying bills. We all know that those basics of living can get in the way of our dreams. The key it to juggle them while you still pursue your dreams. Encouragement from others along the way is huge!

I’m shooting for an early November release of When Faith Begins. Our community has an event held in early November called Candle Light Charm. I usually have a table set up for this event. Our community has been extremely supportive with my writing. Many have purchased my books at this event and others. The local library has been phenomenal with their support, and they are SO appreciated. My daughter just shared a photo this past week of When Love Grows being displayed with a review from one of the librarians. We also have a store in our town that has my books for purchase. All these go a long way in supporting an author, and keeping that drive to get another book out there.

So, I’ll be updating about the release of When Faith Begins. In the mean time, please read When Hope Blooms, and When Love Grows, or read them again to refresh your memory!

For Sale!

I’m doing things a bit backward today. But every now and then, that makes life a bit more exciting! I wrote this post for my Facebook author page this morning, so I’m sharing it on here. Usually I post on here and share it to Facebook. Really exciting…huh? Thank you all so much for your support, likes and comments!

My seventh book, When Love Grows will be available in just a few days. 😍This is pretty exciting for me! I have also started working on the third book in this series…which is also…fantastic! Writing is something I love to do. Marketing is not. 😣 I am not a salesperson, and I really need to be to a certain extent to get my books out there.

I have so many very talented people in my life. It is amazing to me when I see the items you have made, whether it be art, quilting, building, writing, etc. I would literally love to be able to support each and every one of you by purchasing your product, to give you encouragement, to support your business, and to show you that I really DO care about what you are doing in your life. But I cannot. I try to show my support by reading your posts, liking them, loving them and commenting. I don’t know if that helps or not, but it is time I invest in your lives. In some ways it seems sad that our lives have come down to interaction such as a smiley face, or a little red heart…but it is a way to communicate and show support.

As I said, I probably need to be more of a salesperson. But I am not. I don’t like to be hounded, and I know others don’t. I dislike to try to read a post or article and have pop-ups asking me to buy or subscribe. Therefore, I don’t do that to others. I dislike chain messages asking me to show I care. I do, or I wouldn’t comment, like, love your posts. Because my family has asked me not to share some things, especially items about their children on social media, I do not. And I do understand and respect that. Because I write, I have my settings to public to reach my readers.

My books are works of fiction, but my life experiences are woven through each one of them. I’m sharing what I’ve learned, the mistakes I’ve made, and the respect and love I have for my Heavenly Father. I pray this speaks to my readers.

Please share this post with your friends. Please share the post I’ll have in a few days promoting my newest release. And if you’ve read any of my books, please, please review in the places that you can. This is a huge encouragement to me! This writing life is all new, and it has a huge learning curve. Please let me know if I can reach you in a different way, if you’d like to hear more or less from me. You can always interact and have discussions on my group page about my books. I would LOVE that! https://www.facebook.com/groups/216963165342784/

From Shabby to Chic

I had made a goal to post every Tuesday. As you can see, that did not happen this past week. Home renovation projects have kept me very busy. They are going well, but very slow. But at least they are moving along.

There is something about the holiday season that gets me motivated to set the house in order. Maybe it’s the cooler weather, maybe the fact that I like the house to look nice for the decorating. At any rate, it’s that push I need to get it done. Kitchen renovation - 11-04-2017 (2)

This is a picture from early November. The wall cabinets had finally been moved thanks to one of our son-in-laws. Thank you, David! Those cabinets were original to the house, and very heavy. So far, they have held a lot of dishes and are still hanging! New paint color in kitchen - 11-16-2017

This is after painting the color on the walls yesterday. The white parts are where more cabinets are to go and the back splash. I put  20 hinges on the cabinet doors on Tuesday. That made for 100 screws, by hand. I don’t use power tools if I can help it. They really rattle my arms and joints. That is usually where the sons-in-law and our son come in. I rely on them for a lot!

I know I drive my family crazy with the home projects. I really like doing them from the standpoint of taking something old and shabby and making it beautiful again. I just don’t have the desire to live in a home project anymore. I guess I’m at the age where I want it done, and I can just use the kitchen for what it was meant for. I’ll post more pictures when the kitchen is finished…hopefully that won’t be too long!

This week also produced more progress made on my next release…When Love Grows! That is always exciting. My editor is now in the last stages of formatting and making everything look really pretty. Here is a sneak preview…

When Love Grows Cover - 6.2 x 9.5 measurements

If you enjoyed When Hope Blooms, you will love the continuation of Sybil’s story. She could be compared to my kitchen project. Taking something rather shabby on the inside, and making it beautiful. You may purchase When Hope Blooms right here: https://www.amazon.com/Deborah-Ann-Dykeman/e/B01B2BYPK6/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1510855121&sr=1-2-ent

If you are a Prime member, you can have the book by Monday. Books make wonderful Christmas presents as well. Be watching for When Love Grows on Amazon, very soon!

If you enjoy Women’s Christian Fiction, these stories are for you. I’ve had a lot of great feedback from them so far, and that’s wonderful to hear. People have loved the Rubyville series and getting to know the Barton women. Happy readers are very important to me! So make you, or someone you know very happy this holiday season by purchasing a Deborah Ann Dykeman book! I think you’ll be glad you did. Have a great Thursday!

Tuesday Teaser

For those of you who have read When Hope Blooms, you’ve met Sybil Grafton. She’s probably not the nicest person you’ll ever come across.

The sequel to When Hope Blooms is written and in the editing process. I don’t want to share the cover just yet, but here’s just a bit so you may become better acquainted with Sybil.
